Overview

The standard Thailand first trip, and it works. Bangkok gives you the Grand Palace, Wat Arun and a floating market; a short domestic flight then puts you in Phuket for the Phi Phi speedboat day and Phang Nga Bay. We keep one Phuket day completely free, because the boat days start early and you will want it.

1. Day 1

   Arrive Bangkok

   Airport pickup and transfer to your hotel in Sukhumvit or Silom. Evening free — Asiatique riverfront or a Chao Phraya dinner boat are both easy first nights.

2. Day 2

   Bangkok temples and floating market

   Early start for the Damnoen Saduak floating market and the Maeklong railway market, then back into the city for the Grand Palace, Wat Pho's reclining Buddha and Wat Arun across the river.

3. Day 3

   Bangkok to Phuket

   Morning flight to Phuket and transfer to your beach hotel in Patong, Kata or Karon. Afternoon on the beach and sunset at Promthep Cape.

4. Day 4

   Phi Phi Islands by speedboat

   A full day on the water — Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, snorkelling at Bamboo Island and lunch on Phi Phi Don.

5. Day 5

   Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island
